Sudan once had the longest railway network in Africa. Today almost none of it runs. The collapse of the railway is not merely a transport failure — it is one of the causes of Sudan's economic decline. Rebuilding it is one of the most important things a future Sudanese government could do.

Sudan has one of the world's great rivers running through its heart for nearly 2,000 kilometres. Its roads are broken, its railway is collapsed, and its fuel supply is disrupted. The answer to the transport crisis may have been there all along.
